What Datadog is built for

Datadog is built for engineering organizations running large, instrumented infrastructure. You install the Datadog Agent on every host, it collects metrics, logs, and traces, and Datadog aggregates everything into dashboards, alerts, and APM traces. It is a complete platform: infrastructure monitoring, application performance monitoring, log management, security monitoring, real user monitoring, and more are all available as separate products that integrate tightly.

At scale, Datadog's breadth is its main advantage. One platform covering every layer of observability, with correlation between metrics, logs, and traces, is genuinely valuable for large engineering teams.

A team running 10 hosts with Infrastructure Pro only costs $150/mo on annual billing. Add APM and you are at $460/mo. Add log ingestion at modest volume and you are past $500/mo. Monthly billing costs 15–20% more.

7di does not charge per host. It charges per check. The free plan gives 2,000 credits per month. Here is what that translates to in monitoring capacity:

On the Pro plan ($12/mo, 8,000 credits): 20 uptime monitors at 5-minute intervals, 5 Smart alerts at 1-hour intervals, and 3 Live lookups at 6-hour intervals costs roughly 7,700 credits per month. Total: $12/mo flat, no per-host scaling.

Where 7di is a better fit than Datadog

Datadog's per-host model makes sense when you have large infrastructure and need deep per-host visibility. For a solo developer running 3 projects, a small team monitoring a handful of services, or anyone who wants a live dashboard without deploying an agent on every server, the per-host model does not fit.

7di requires no agent and no instrumentation. The Domain / uptime widget checks any URL from outside. The Custom JS widget calls any API and returns a value. The PostgreSQL widget tests your database connection. None of these require touching the server being monitored.

Datadog also has no equivalent to AI-powered monitoring. There is no way to configure a Datadog alert based on a natural-language condition that requires web search to evaluate. A Smart alert in 7di can fire when "my OpenAI API usage this month is above $80" or "the current Vercel bandwidth usage is above 80% of the plan limit" without any metrics instrumentation at all.

For data that lives outside your infrastructure entirely (prices on retailer websites, government wait times, public job board counts), Datadog cannot track it. 7di's Live lookup widget can track any value on the public web.

Where Datadog is the right choice

If you need distributed APM across many services, correlated logs and traces, real user monitoring, security threat detection, or unified observability across a large instrumented fleet, Datadog is built for that. It is genuinely the best tool for teams with the budget for it and the infrastructure to instrument.
